The White House Defense Team

Who's who among the lawyers defending the President

Charles Ruff

Ruff led off when the President's defense team began its arguments on January 18. His experience as a former Watergate special prosecutor gives him credibility, his sardonic wit gives him mass appeal, and even Republican Senator Orrin Hatch concedes that "Ruff is a wise choice because he comes across as totally honest, very shrewd and very smart"

Gregory Craig

The newest member of the defense team, Craig was brought on board by President Clinton as a special counsel to help manage his impeachment defense. He is an experienced criminal lawyer, a former aide to Senator Edward Kennedy, and led off the President's defense before the House Judiciary Committee. Craig does well in front of T.V. cameras, a crucial asset as the Senate chambers are transformed from hallowed halls to a fishbowl.

David Kendall

The President's longtime private lawyer, Kendall has moved to the background of the Clinton defense after the negative reception his overly legalistic attempts at defending the president received last year. Still, he has more experience than anybody dealing with the President's legal problems, and is probably the most trusted member of the Clinton team.

Dale Bumpers

A former Senator and longtime Clinton acquaintance, Bumpers concluded the first round of the President's defense January 21 with a combination of legal arguments, good old boy humor and appeals to common sense.

Lanny Breuer

Operating mostly behind the scenes, Breuer has earned a reputation as a low-key workhorse in the Clinton camp. He was hit with a supoena from Ken Starr in 1998, and was forced to testify before the grand jury despite strong protest from the White House.
