On the Margins of War
The images of war most often seen from Yugoslavia are those of
"surgical''
strikes against military, industrial and political targets. More rare
are
those of the "collateral'' and accidental damage done to ordinary homes
and
ordinary lives. It's a part of the conflict that is often hidden or slow
to be
acknowledged by those making the mistakes, and it is usually used as
propaganda by the regime on the receiving end.
A destroyed passenger train, seen through the damaged fence of an
overpass,
smolders after a NATO
missile attack in southeastern Serbia April 12. The guided bomb smashed
into the train, killing at least 10 people and
injuring 16 others. The train was cut in two, with two of its cars
turned
into smoking wrecks and two others damaged. NATO representatives later
said
the attack was a mistake.
